Backup internet for dental offices
From the FAILOVER5 team at Twisted VoIP, Chandler, Arizona · Updated October 2026
In a lot of dental offices the phones, the texting and the schedule all run through the internet now. Weave, RingCentral and similar systems put the front desk online. When the connection drops, the phones stop ringing at the same moment the schedule disappears.
The front desk is the first casualty
- Cloud practice software such as Dentrix Ascend and Curve Dental
- Weave or other internet phones and patient texting
- Insurance eligibility and claims through your clearinghouse
- Card payments and financing applications like CareCredit
Offices on server-based software like Open Dental or Dentrix often keep charting during an outage, but still lose phones, claims, eligibility and payments.
Keep imaging off the backup
Panoramic images and CBCT scans are large. If your imaging syncs to the cloud, ask your IT provider to keep that traffic on the main line only. Everything at the front desk is small by comparison and runs comfortably on cellular.
Suggested plan: 20 GB plan, $123/month
Phones are the biggest user at most offices. 20 GB covers phones, scheduling and claims through a long outage.

- We use Weave. Will it work on the backup?
- Yes. Weave phones need an internet connection and don't care which one. Put them on the backup line and calls keep coming in.
- What about remote access for our IT company?
- Remote support tools work over the backup. If yours requires a fixed address, choose a Verizon plan with a static IP.
Does it pay for itself?
The 20 GB plan is $1,476 a year. It pays for itself if it saves about 7 appointments a year.
Think about your last outage: how many appointments did it cost you?
