Backup internet for hotels and motels

From the FAILOVER5 team at Twisted VoIP, Chandler, Arizona · Updated October 2026

Cloud property management systems like Cloudbeds, Mews and OPERA Cloud run the whole front desk. When the internet goes, so do check-ins, card pre-authorizations and the reservations coming in from booking sites, and the night auditor is usually the only one there.

Front desk only

Guest WiFi is the biggest data user in any hotel. Before adding backup, make sure the front desk network is separate from guest WiFi, then put only the front desk on the backup line. That keeps check-in, payments and reservations running without guests eating the data.

What keeps working with a backup line

  • Check-in and check-out in your cloud PMS
  • Reservations and rate updates through your channel manager, such as SiteMinder
  • Card pre-authorizations and payments
  • Key card encoding, where the encoder talks to the PMS over the network
  • Front desk phones, if they run over the internet

Overbookings are the hidden cost

When the channel manager can't update availability, booking sites keep selling rooms you no longer have. An hour offline on a busy night can turn into walked guests the next day.

Suggested plan: 20 GB plan, $123/month

Front desk traffic is modest. 20 GB covers most small and mid-size properties; larger hotels with more systems on the backup should look at 50 GB.

Questions we hear from hotels and motels

Can we give guests backup WiFi during an outage?
You can with a much larger plan, but most properties don't. Guests have their own phones; the front desk is what has to keep working.
Our PMS vendor asks for a fixed IP. Is that possible?
Yes. Verizon plans are available with a static IP for $3 a month more.

Does it pay for itself?

The 20 GB plan is $1,476 a year. It pays for itself if it saves about 11 room nights a year.

Think about your last outage: how many room nights did it cost you?
