Backup internet for gyms and fitness studios

From the FAILOVER5 team at Twisted VoIP, Chandler, Arizona · Updated October 2026

At a 24-hour gym, an outage at 5 a.m. can mean members standing outside a locked door. Cloud access control checks credentials online, and check-in, class booking and billing all live in the cloud too.

The door is the problem

Cloud access systems such as Kisi and Brivo cache some permissions on the door controller, but how they behave offline depends on the setup. Ask your installer. A backup line takes the question off the table: the doors keep checking in as usual.

Front desk and studio

  • Check-in and membership software such as Mindbody, ABC Glofox or Wodify
  • Class bookings and waitlists syncing with the app
  • Retail, smoothie bar and personal training payments

What to leave off

Streaming TVs, music and member WiFi use far more data than everything else combined. Keep them on the main line and the backup will last.

Suggested plan: 10 GB plan, $88/month

Check-in, doors and payments are light. 10 GB works for most single locations; 20 GB if phones or more screens are on the backup.

Questions we hear from gyms and fitness studios

Will members notice the switch?
Usually not. The router changes over in seconds and the door and check-in systems carry on.
We run classes with streamed music. Can that use the backup?
It can with a bigger plan, but most studios keep music on the main line and play a downloaded playlist if the internet drops.

Does it pay for itself?

The 10 GB plan is $1,056 a year. It pays for itself if it keeps about 2 members a year from cancelling.

Counts a lost member as a year of dues. Members locked out at 5 a.m. are the ones who start looking at other gyms.
