Backup internet for pharmacies

From the FAILOVER5 team at Twisted VoIP, Chandler, Arizona · Updated October 2026

A pharmacy can't fill much without the internet. New prescriptions arrive electronically, every insurance claim adjudicates in real time with the PBM, and controlled substances need a PDMP check. Lose the connection and the counter fills with patients who can't leave with their medication.

What depends on the connection

  • Incoming e-prescriptions over Surescripts
  • Real-time claims to PBMs at the point of sale
  • PDMP lookups before dispensing controlled substances
  • Pharmacy systems such as PioneerRx, Liberty and BestRx, which sit in the store but send claims over the internet
  • Card payments, including FSA and HSA cards

Static IP and your switch vendor

Some pharmacy networks and switch vendors expect traffic from a known address. If yours does, choose a Verizon plan with a static IP so the backup line is recognized too. Your software vendor can tell you whether it's needed.

The cost is in the line, not the data

Claims and prescriptions are small messages. The real cost of an outage is the queue: patients waiting, phones ringing, and prescriptions that move to the chain down the street. That's why even a light-use plan pays for itself quickly.

Suggested plan: 20 GB plan, $123/month

Prescription and claim traffic is very light. 20 GB leaves plenty of room for phones and the front register.

Questions we hear from pharmacies

What happens to prescriptions sent while we are offline?
That depends on the prescriber's system and the network, and they may arrive late. With backup internet the question doesn't come up: they arrive as they're sent.
Can we put the backup router in the back room?
Only if signal is good there. Back rooms with shelving and concrete walls can be weak. A spot near the front or an external antenna works better.

Does it pay for itself?

The 20 GB plan is $1,476 a year. It pays for itself if it saves about 25 prescriptions a year.

Think about your last outage: how many prescriptions did it cost you?
