Backup internet for retail stores

From the FAILOVER5 team at Twisted VoIP, Chandler, Arizona · Updated October 2026

Most shoppers don't carry cash anymore. When a store's internet goes down, checkout becomes a line of people holding items they can't pay for, and some of them put the items down and leave.

What a register outage looks like

  • Shopify POS, Square, Lightspeed and Clover registers stop approving cards
  • Stock counts stop syncing, so the website keeps selling items the store just sold
  • Buy online, pick up in store orders stall at the counter
  • Gift card and loyalty balances can't be looked up

Why a phone hotspot is not enough

A manager's phone can keep one register going for a while. It drops when the phone gets a call, it moves when the manager walks away, and it can't carry every register, the handhelds and the back office at once. A dedicated cellular router sits in one place and switches over by itself.

Mall and strip center stores

Signal inside a mall varies a lot from store to store, and even from the front of a store to the back. We offer Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile, so you can pick whichever is strongest where your registers are. If you're not sure, ask us and we'll help you check before you order.

Suggested plan: 10 GB plan, $88/month

Checkout and inventory traffic is light. Most single stores do well on 10 GB; step up to 20 GB if your back office computers and phones also use the backup.

Questions we hear from retail stores

Should security cameras use the backup?
Usually not. Cameras that upload video can use more data in an afternoon than your registers use in a month. Keep them on the main line unless remote viewing during an outage matters to you.
Will online orders keep coming in?
Online orders come in through your ecommerce platform, not your store's internet. What backup internet protects is the store's side: syncing stock and fulfilling pickup orders.

Does it pay for itself?

The 10 GB plan is $1,056 a year. It pays for itself if it saves about 26 sales a year.
